regram @natgeo Photo @ladzinski / A curious 3 month old #lionplayfully chasing grasshoppers in the thorny #kalaharibush. This #cub, along with her 6 siblings, is too young to be part of the greater pride and the sole responsibility of mom. Transitioning from milk to meat means that their mother spends most of her day hunting alone in the field while the cubs stay hidden. It's a vulnerable time but these cubs spend the day like most children, playing, exploring, wrestling and getting into trouble.

Our heli ride ended with a surprise. We landed beside this stand alone one bedroom residence set out in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. Stocked with the finest scotches and steaks, our private chef prepared a delicious meal and left us to dine as the sun set. The moon and stars then revealed themselves at their brightest, without a single light to be seen for hundreds of miles. Drinking too much scotch around a raging bonfire. Falling asleep in the most cozy of beds to the sounds of the animals in the distance in the solitude of this 275,000 acre private estate. This experience is one that I will remember forever. Thank you @tswalu! #tswalu #myepicroad #marklakinphotography #kalaharidesert@epicroad

Tswalu Kalahari is home to billionaire philanthropist Nicky Oppenheimer. It's also South Africa’s largest private game reserve at a mind-blowing 275,000 acres of spectacular grasslands and mountains. A small boutique hotel as well as the Oppenheimer family home (which can be rented when not in use by the family) allow for a maximum of only 30 guests on this massive green desert. #heliaddict #myepicroad #marklakinphotography #tswalu #kalaharidesert@tswalu @epicroad

A baby #meerkathugging its sibling while on the lookout at sunrise in the #kalahari. These incredible little animals have very strong family ties, constantly watching each other's backs, hunting together and defending their turf. @danahrichardson @tswalu @kosie_lategan

Heavy is the crown indeed 😊 regram @natgeo Photo @ladzinski / The king patrolling his territory at sunrise in the hot #Kalahari. Lions generally have much lighter manes than this big guy here and though it is unclear why, there are many theories. Some biologists believe that this pigment may be an attribute of heat stress, prolonged days between eating and Lions that exercise more due to larger territories. Lions do not have the ability to sweat through glands, only through panting, which can make for some brutally hot conditions when you're neck and head are covered in thick fur. A tough price to pay for fashion and intimidation, heavy is the crown! 🦁👑
