The clownfish and the anemone are partners in the sea: the clownfish keeps predators from the anemone and the anemone provides valuable cover to an entire family of clownfish also called anemonefish. Papua New Guinea is a cornerstone of the Coral Triangle, a region in the Pacific Ocean known for its extreme marine biodiversity. It is critical for all us to recognize the role of oceans in our lives. We are inseparable from the sea, the ocean produces more than half of our oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide. photo by @jenniferhayesig | A whale shark approaches a small boat called a banca for a handful of krill in Oslob Philippines. Six days a week thousands of tourist show up here to see and swim with dozens of hand fed whale sharks. These giants arrive seeking a handout of krill as they swim below, past and around the visitors seeking an encounter with worlds largest fish, a plankton feeding shark. The feeding stops around noon and the whale sharks disappear to the depths. There is conservation debate and controversy about the effects of hand feeding these large migratory sharks. Many scientist condemn the feeding because of concerns that this activity congregates the sharks making them vulnerable and interrupts their natural foraging and migration patterns. Others that support the practice suggest that the sharks act as ocean. ambassadors teaching visitors about the sea, that the economy generated around these sharks makes them extremely valuable and protects them from harm and that the sharks are free to come and go at will. Video by @DavidDoubilet and Team A large colony of garden eels sway and feed in the gentle currents off Dumaguete Philippines. Garden eels are extremely shy and harmless members of the conger eel family. They live in burrows on the sea floor and are very social creatures that form large colonies. The currents deliver a continuous passing supply of plankton allowing the eels to feed in the comfort and safety of their sandy home. As our team approached this giant colony they quickly vanished into their burrow as if they never existed. I find these colonies to be hypnotic living gardens in the sea. Thank you to Leo Blanco for video support. A titan triggerfish rises from its nest to tell our team to move along in Anilao Philippines. Titans aggressively defend their nests from raiding fish, eels and passing divers. Once we saw that this wonderful creature had eggs to protect we moved on to stop distracting her from the nest. If you watch closely this titan returns to the nest and lays flat across it to hide it from hoards of hungry wrasse. As this was happening the male, out of frame, swam wide circles several feet above us. @Regrann from @natgeo - Photo by @daviddoubilet // Table corals compete for space on Sno Reef on the Great Barrier Reef. This is a picture of a healthy robust Great Barrier Reef but today the worlds largest coral reef is literally in hot water and struggling to survive. Rising temperatures are causing coral bleaching, a process that occurs when thermal stress causes the coral polyp to lose its algae that provides its color and supplemental nutrients. Sequential back to back bleaching events in 2016 and 2017 have affected nearly 900 miles of the reef giving the reef little time to recover. #repost@daviddoubilet (@get_repost) ・・・ A very large and curious Maori wrasse followed our team around Sno Reef on the Great Barrier Reef. This big guy weighed several hundred pounds and had spear wounds from unsuccessful poaching encounters. The corals on the Great Barrier Reef are now in the midst of another unprecedented coral bleaching event. High sea temperatures in 2016 caused 90% of the 1200 mile long reef to bleach, a process where the tiny coral polyp loses its symbiotic algae due to heat stress. The algae provide valuable life sustaining nutrients to the coral and give it its color. If conditions improve quickly enough some corals can recover from a bleach event while others die and become covered in algae. Scientist estimate that 20% + of the Great Barrier Reef corals did not recover during the 2016 event. The extent of the 2017 bleach is yet to be known. Sequential bleaching events weakens the corals resilience and speeds the death of the reef. Squuueeee never tire of the turtles! 🐢🐢🐢 @blueoceanfilmfest ・・・ Photo by @daviddoubilet A green sea turtle hatchling swims for the protection of the open sea off Nengo Nengo, French Polynesia. The females will return to their nesting beach to lay their eggs, males will never put a flipper on shore again. The green sea turtle is an endangered species and threatened even further by rising sea levels that will claim their centuries old nesting beaches to the sea. * #seaturtle #frenchpolynesia #baby #endangeredspecies #climatechange #WorldOceansDay2017 * For #MoreOcean follow @daviddoubilet with @blueoceanfilmfest

Sea time holiday / the colors of underwater planet #repost@daviddoubilet (@get_repost) ・・・ A gallery of life on the Great Barrier Reef. The late largest most iconic coral reef system may be located in Queensland Australia but it really belongs to the world. When I was a kid the Great Barrier was the first reef on my radar of imagination. Today the worlds largest coral reef is literally in hot water. Sequential coral bleaching events in 2016 & 2017 have affected 900+ miles of the 1400 mile long structure. Thermal stress causes the coral polyp to lose its symbiotic algae that provide color and supplemental nutrients. Unprecedented back to back bleaching have left this great reef with little time to recover and struggling to survive. Foto maravilhosa da Grande Barreira de Corais na 🇦🇺 Australia 💙🌍🐠 #next2travel #greatbarrierreef #australia Repost da @natgeo 📸 by @daviddoubilet #repost@natgeo ・・・ A DeHavilland Beaver floatplane flies along the channel separating Hook and Hardy reefs on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is the worlds largest and most iconic coral reef system in the world and currently experiencing a 2017 coral bleaching event. High water temperatures cause the coral polyps to lose their symbiotic algae. Last year (2016) 90% of the 1200 mile long reef system experienced an unprecedented coral bleach event. Bleached corals may recover if temperatures drop or they may die and become algae covered deadzones.
