Photo by @amivitale for @natgeo. A small herd of rescued elephants are being lovingly rehabilitated and raised at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya in the hopes that they can be reunited with their wild brethren. Elephants are ecosystem “engineers” who feed on low brush and bulldoze small trees, promoting growth of grasses, which in turn attract bulk grazers like buffalo, endangered Grevy’s zebras, eland, and oryx, themselves prey for carnivores: lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, leopards. Fifteen-month-old elephant Sosian is loaded into a specially adapted vehicle for transport to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya. He was brought in after his mother was found shot and mortally wounded. Elephants are creatures of habit and will often return to familiar places and could retrieve temporarily lost youngsters, so the Reteti team makes sure to take in only orphans. They work hard to rehabilitate the young elephants in the hopes that they can be released back to their family herds. Amos Leleruk and his elephant hangers-on step out for a meal. In the wild, weaning usually occurs when elephants are five to 10 years old. Tracking lions with my friend and idol @amivitale during the filming of Kenya Wildlife Diaries. I found this gem in my archives and had to share. So completely filled with light she was, Ami's joy bursts like the giant Euphorbia behind her. I've never known a more considerate, sensitive, resilient, hardworking and positive artist who has inspired me so deeply. I'm so glad to have shared some of these epic adventures together! #lewa #kenya #africa #AmiVitale #lagga #liontracking

Meeting of the minds! Melina and @amivitale met in the park and shared their photographs with each other. Ami imparted the wise advice of starting by taking photos in your own backyard, "because you know it best and you're going to have the most incredible insight... because you know it better than anybody else". Watch a sneak peek of the interview in our All American Kids teaser—just posted to the Cloud Animal Media Facebook page. #amivitale #wildlifephotographer #kidphotography #kidphotohrapher #whenigrowup #allamericankids #girlpower

Black and white picture. I'll post the original soon..! . #repost@amivitale (@get_repost) ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. Suyian was the first elephant rescued by the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya. Reteti is part of the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy and is the first community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. The Matthews Range where Namunyak is situated is home to Africa's second-largest elephant population. Community-based wildlife keepers there are working to rehabilitate abandoned and orphaned elephants in order to eventually return them to the nearby wild herds. In this sense, community based conservation is likely to be the only viable alternative for vast tracts of Africa, in the parts beyond agriculture and where big animals and nomadic pastoralists still make their home. This elephant sanctuary is the culmination of a two-decades long process of tipping conservation upon its head, protecting wildlife for, and not just from, people. In that sense the sanctuary is as much about people as it’s about elephants. The elephants and this initiative need your support. @Regrann from @amivitale - Video by @amivitale. Snack time for Fupi the giraffe and his pals near Sarara Camp (@sararacamp) in Northern Kenya. These giraffe will leave Sarara and go back to the wild once they are strong enough to survive on their own. Fupi is a reticulated giraffe, which the latest research indicates is one of four distinct species of giraffe. Reticulated giraffe number about 8,000 individuals — as a separate species rather than a subspecies, it makes them some of the most endangered large mammals in the world. In my National Geographic story this week, I followed a group of scientists working to collar and tag giraffe elsewhere in Kenya in order to learn more about their behavior: http://on.natgeo.com/2sW5XVb Please follow and help support conservation initiatives at @sararacamp @sandiegozoo @giraffe_conservation @nrt_kenya @nature_org and @nature_africa to #savegiraffes! @kenyawildlifeservice @lewa_wildlife @natgeo @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa #worldgiraffeday #giraffe #reticulatedgiraffe #savegiraffe #kenya #northernkenya #magicalkenya #whyilovekenya #africa #everydayafrica #nikonusa #nikonlove #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador #nikond5s #photojournalism #amivitale - #regrann
